Arizona
EXPERIENCED HORSE CARETAKER with RV wanted. An Arizona ranch is seeking a single or couple experienced in horse caretaking. The work includes heavy lifting, feeding special diets, picking up manure, cleaning and filling water tanks, checking animals for health issues and knowing what to do if a problem arises. Also involves being able to safely operate a tractor and drive a vehicle. This is a manual labor job, typically two hours AM and PM, some days there will be other work. If you can do maintenance and repairs that would be great also. Please only respond if you actually have the experience and capabilities we are seeking, you have your own self-contained RV to live in. We are at elevation so it is cooler here compared to Phoenix, but winters are mostly mild. This is not a “can learn” job, we seek experience. The owner will have to work to pay a caretaker, and it becomes apparent very quickly if whomever is hired cannot do the work. In order to be paid, you will need to do the work, be able to maintain a schedule, be observant and physically capable. We have no housing to offer, but can offer full hook-ups and shared internet. We are seeking a salaried person, prefer long-term. No riding involved. For more information, please call [Contact info available to subscribers].
Letters to the Editor
Hi Gary and family, I want to thank you and The Caretaker Gazette for sending me a great pair of caretakers for my property. Due to a death in our extended family we were left with a vacant home and land and no one to step in and care for it until it could be sold. Our help-wanted ad with you resulted in several great responses so we had top-notch people to choose from. The caretakers we found through you cared for the property as if it were their own. We couldn’t be more pleased. Thank you from all of us. P.K., Philadelphia, PA
Thank you for taking the time to write to us, Paul. We were sorry to read about the death in your family but happy that you could find some great caretakers to look after your family home and property. Property owners have told us that they have found the most experienced and reliable caretakers via The Caretaker Gazette.
My wife and I responded to an ad for a position in Costa Rica that ran in your Gazette last year. We weren’t selected for the position at the time and we weren’t in the right place work and life wise that we were ready to pursue something else. As luck would have it the landowner of the Costa Rica property emailed to tell us that the caretakers he had lined up for the position didn’t work out so he wanted to know if we were still interested. We were offered the position! We’re about to embark on a new experience and a new adventure thanks to you. K.L. and B.B., Saint Petersburg, FL
That’s good news, Ken! Thanks for sharing it. Your situation is not unusual – sometimes, for various reasons, things do not work out with the first applicants selected so the property owner will return to the applicant pool to find the perfect match for his/her situation.
Hi Gary, please sign me up for another three years of The Caretaker Gazette. Over the years I’ve made great use of your publication as far as finding house sitters for my own home and finding house sitting positions for myself around the world for when I travel. So, I’ve happily been on both sides and look forward to more years of traveling with the help of you and your publication. Thank you. M.A.W., Boulder, CO
Hi Mary Ann, thanks for writing! Many of our subscribers are in a situation similar to yours, where they are able to travel, utilize the Gazette to find house sitters for their own homes and find house sitting positions for themselves while they travel.
Dear Gary, I know I’m late in giving you feedback on my ad that went out in one of your email blasts but I wanted to let you know what a great resource your Gazette has been for us. There are so many scams on the web that is difficult to know who to trust. After checking out The Caretaker Gazette for a couple of months and speaking to you personally we went ahead and placed an email ad with you, seeking a caretaker position anywhere on the west coast (in hopes of moving from the northeast to be closer to our grandchildren in northern California). Our email blast went out on a Monday night and by Tuesday morning we woke up to email messages from people with positions in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho! After making a quick trip out to southern Oregon to interview and check out one of the situations, followed by a few more weeks of working out a contract, we are now living rent-free on a lovely guest ranch in Oregon which is within a few hours’ drive of our grandchildren who we wanted to be near. My husband and I are now in better shape than we’ve been in years due to being outside, out of a condo in a busy city and back into a home with a lovely yard in a very beautiful part of the country. Thanks so much for providing such a wonderful service. You and your staff have done such a great job at identifying a need and meeting it. Sincerely yours, Mary Kay L. Lakeview, OR
Dear Mary Kay, congratulations on your new position! I’m glad to read that your email broadcast ad was successful and resulted in you finding such a nice position near your grandchildren. I wish you the best in your new location!

HELP WANTED. [Contact info available to subscribers] in Vernantes, Saumur, in the Loire Valley has some rooms to renovate, as well as finishing touches all around the chateau. We have availability for you throughout the year and are keen to book interested people, like yourself, for longer periods anytime over the year. We ask for a minimum stay of two weeks with us, but longer periods are a big bonus. We love positive enthusiastic people who enjoy all that life offers and can share that energy with those around them. If you like working in the garden or have general handyman skills…we would love to hear from you. We would also love a stonemason to join us, as we have a few stone walls to repair. And if you have experience working behind the bar or preparing breakfasts, then that works for us too, over the summer period. We also love any tradespeople…or those with renovation experience. The gardens and grounds take a bit to look after with 22 acres of forest, a formal French garden, an orchard and vegetable plot, a picnic area, an in-ground pool, and a moat with 20 caves. So if you like working outside, this is the place for you. We have a regular team of gardeners but we need additional help from people who want to potter about doing additional weeding and whipper-snippering. For reasons of health and safety you must be able to speak English to a good standard. We run an accommodation business in the chateau over the summer, in order to raise money to effect the renovation work. Accommodation for helpers is in a three bedroomed shared (either twin or double-bedded rooms) converted outbuilding on the grounds, with shared bathroom/laundry, living/kitchen/dining and Wi-Fi. We ask that you work the minimum of 28 hours a week, but we like you to work longer hours during the week five to six hours per day, so you can take off two days over the weekend, to explore the area. There is a lot to do in the region in your free time and we’ve got bikes for you to use to get around. You`ll need a sturdy pair of boots and depending on the season, warm clothes and a waterproof jacket would be handy. We provide gloves and Personal Protective Equipment if necessary. We also have a fully-equipped carpentry workshop and saw mill. You will be in excellent company, have decent accommodation and eat good food. Three meals a day are offered with shared cooking facilities, as you get an allowance to buy food from the local Supermarket and we share some meals with you in the chateau. Why don`t you join us and immerse yourself in the French way of life at an ancient castle in the Loire. We are Jenny and David, from Australia. We speak English and are trying to learn French! Please call us at [Contact info available to subscribers].

While on the property, we will provide you with private hi-end accommodations with cable and Wi-Fi, maid service once a week for bedding, gourmet breakfast and dinner, and a negotiated stipend. Lastly, we will occasionally give you free use of a vehicle to explore the island. This is a “work for hire” position and does not imply employment. You must carry health and auto insurance for yourself. We are seeking a self-motivated, organized, in shape and strong, and very tidy and clean individual, who will work 32+ hours a week to upkeep our estate’s land, agriculture, and gardens. We are willing to train in our procedures, but you must have experience. There are occasions where we have to do a little sanding and painting, and pressure washing. We live in a jungle, where it is absolutely necessary to spray herbicides and insecticides. We do our best to be as organic as possible. You must be proficient and competent in using a commercial mower, weed eater, blower, hedge trimmer, chain saw, pole chain saw, and silky pole saw. We use mostly Stihl equipment, and have an ECHO weed eater, and a commercial mower by Honda. You will have to tend to all fertilizing and weed maintenance. You must be competent in installing, maintaining, and repairing irrigation. We use Toro products. We have over 60 different fruit and spice trees, and edible berries and bushes, vegetable and herb gardens, and a ¾ acre botanical garden with rare palms, Heliconia, and Gingers. We are in the process of adding three lotus and lily ponds in mid-2022. It is fabulous, but it is hard work to maintain all of them. If you love plants and the outdoors, this is your dream job. Do not fool yourself, it is hard work, but well worth it. The property has a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. It is a spectacular place. If you feel this position might be your calling, please send me your resume and a list of references. I will review them and give you a call to set up an interview time. I can do FaceTime, Skype, WhatsApp, or Zoom. Please have one of these options available for your interviews. No drug use or smoking of any kind, and we expect responsible alcohol use! We do not accept applicants with children or pets. All applicants will be subject to background checks. You may contact me, [Contact info available to subscribers] for questions. Iceland
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED to work on the historical island of Videy for the 17th year in a row with our host, the city of Reykjavík from May 9 to May 18, 2023. Videy is a popular destination during the summer among Icelandic and foreign visitors. Videy or “Wood Island” is the largest island in the Kollafjorour Bay, just outside Reykjavík. The island is covered by many species of plants and at least 30 species of breeding birds have been counted here. Videy was inhabited soon after the settlement of Iceland in the 10th century. In the beginning of the 20th century, around 100 people lived there. Today the island is uninhabited. There is a regular ferry connection between the island and the harbor of Reykjavík. The island is only a few hundred meters away from the city and the trip takes a few minutes. This makes Videy so special; it is a peaceful place, very close to the busy city life of the capital. There are hiking and cycling paths around the island and there is no motor traffic allowed. It also features intriguing sculptural artwork, amongst them all nine pairs of basalt pillars that comprise Richard Serra’s work “Áfangar” and Yoko Ono’s “Imagine Peace” column, a tower of light, which is supported by the widow of John Lennon. Other places of interest on Videy are related to archaeological research. Volunteers will help prepare the island for the summer season. Volunteers will beautify the surroundings by cleaning up the area, especially along the coastline, for instance by hand-picking garbage or collecting trash blown by the wind or brought by the sea to the shores and surroundings. [Contact info available to subscribers] volunteers may carry out some gardening activities as well and possibly make and maintain walking paths. Well maintained paths enable people to visit the area without damaging it and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. Depending on the advance of the project and weather conditions, volunteers may have other possible tasks such as checking up and repairing garden furniture. The working day normally runs from 9am to 5pm with breaks for lunch and coffee; however, please be prepared for some flexibility due to the nature of Iceland’s changeable weather, as we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities planned. The temperature in May can drop during the evenings. Volunteers should have motivation to work outside and work in all kinds of weather, as it can get cold and rainy. The working plan is flexible and it will depend on the needs of our host. No previous experience is necessary. The camp takes place around the summer solstice, when the sun hardly sets and the nights are almost as bright as the days. The bright nights are magical and staying awake and enjoying the beautiful surroundings is a unique experience. During the time of the camp, participants will have the opportunity to experience the midnight sun as there are 24 hours of light even if the sun does set for short periods of time. [Contact info available to subscribers] volunteers will be lodged in a local house on Videy Island, in shared rooms. The facilities are equipped with a kitchen, shower, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms. Please bring your own sleeping bag. Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food [Contact info available to subscribers] provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country. For more info please visit [Contact info available to subscribers] or you can email [Contact info available to subscribers].

Julie and David at Lucia Falls, Washington
It seemed to take hold of us from the beginning when we met in 2010. I was doing house sitting in Los Angeles at the time besides my endeavors in the Entertainment Industry. I had housesat for many people in the Hollywood business, including celebrities. We had only known each other for two weeks after meeting, but I had a yearly housesit I had done in Seattle for years. I kept hearing this voice in my head – “ask him to come with you.” “No”, I thought, “I love that drive and some alone time after LA.” The Voice wouldn’t stop. So, okay. I asked him did he want to drive up with me, then he could fly back. He had never seen the Pacific Northwest – which I had lived in on and off for 10 years, and am an extremely Big fan of it. He said, “Why not?!” We started out the road trip up the stunning Coast Highway 1 route and the 101 towards Seattle. We had a terrific time (I love the Bill Murray story – take a trip with someone if you think you are in love. “If you can make it through that without killing each other – come home and get married immediately.”) We arrived in Oregon then Washington and David was bowled over with the beauty. We stayed for about a month. He never took the plane ride back. I couldn’t get him to leave… LOL. David had a huge Hollywood career working with Tom Hanks, Ron Howard and many others. I started out since I was 12 in the theatre and then went to New York City – one of my dreams for many years. Turns out – David and I almost met each other there 20 years before. His friend lived on the same street I did. Synchronicity. And, here we are with a decade now of house sitting, of property caretaking and in the last two years added Guest Innkeeping to our resume. It seemed to evolve. It has a life of its own. David and I ended up starting an online boutique marketing firm that helps small businesses. We began to help the Big Foot Lodge in Hood River, Oregon with marketing – until one day the owner lost their part-time Guest Host. We felt like we could ‘flip an egg’ and she was wonderful to work with, giving us full rein of the place while she was out of the country. We helped avert many a crisis in bookings while there, got her up on Google which was unclaimed heretofore, got her a great review system going on Yelp and got her up to a 4 star rating across the internet. We kept going back to help and found that we loved hosting, interacting with people, and the adventure of running a Lodge in Oregon! Suddenly, we found that many Innkeepers never get a break and also thought – we would make great “Temporary Guest Hosts” while people took a break from their business. We know things! We then took a six month gig with a friend’s country property while they snow birded and put all our stuff in storage – and it just kept on going! At the time, I remembered The Caretaker Gazette! And thought – “Oh, Yeah?!” I had subscribed a decade before when I was looking for horse ranches in Montana to do research for a horse script I was writing. Anyway, I contacted Gary, gave him my Visa card info and signed up again with a new subscription. We immediately talked to a fellow in France with a chateau who was interested in us but the timing was off – we still plan on going there some time, we are on his ‘notify’ list. We interviewed for a $70,000 job in the Pennsylvania countryside with horses. We talked to a Montana entrepreneur about being caretakers while they mostly weren’t there. A Colorado property was very interested in us too, but the locale wasn’t really right for us. Word to the wise: Make sure the terrain and weather and lifestyle of the place you are choosing is something that really matches what works for you! We even toyed with the idea of being private executive cooks for a wealthy family, since we love great food and had some experience – why not make $90,000 a year feeding people fantastic meals? And, voila, within about two weeks we had some seriously good offers from our first issue of the Gazette. One such connection came from a Pennsylvania property owner. He had converted a historic old church and property into a fantastic event center, and made the Rectory and Convent into a bed and breakfast operation. He had a Help-Wanted ad in that issue looking for Innkeepers, so we were intrigued and answered his ad.

The Dock, Little Glen Lake, M22 Inn
We booked a flight out to see him after reading his ad and speaking to him. We got there and it turns out – the Rectory wasn’t really ready for innkeeping yet as it was still unfurnished and being renovated. We said, “Heck, why don’t we help you get your online presence going through on the Chapel?”
We became Project Managers long distance for them, worked on his website, got all his social media in place, got them a newspaper article, worked the Facebook angle and bookings came flowing in. After that, we helped him with vacation properties throughout Pennsylvania, including beautiful eclectic Cottages (go for the fall colors, folks!), built a website and rinsed and repeated what we had done for the Chapel. We just loved the owner and his family and being able to serve them to get their dreams off the ground has been a treasured gig. The Rectory just had its first booking and will now be ready for an Innkeeper! We continue to talk to the stakeholders and work on all the marketing. That was a big win for us, and great income while we were looking for other gigs ~ to be able to use all our knowledge and to help someone to get their dream. The first idea was to be ‘rent free’ and put in some great savings while we did property caretaking. It has been that way for two years now. We found another opportunity through the Gazette listings and ran an Airbnb on the Oregon Coast for the next winter. Then, the Universe… (because “everything is always working out for us” ‘-) presented us with a Gazette ad in Michigan, after another Coastal job we just missed getting because of a timing issue. I got a sudden email from another historic inn, this one in Glen Arbor, Michigan after sending in our resumes. Michigan, hmmm…??? Never would have thought of going there? Turns out – we had no idea Michigan was so gorgeous! The water on the little lake, literally looks almost like the Caribbean. Who knew?! After discussing some details, the response was: “When can we talk?” We Facetimed an interview (which we always recommend!) and got along famously with the General Manager. You want to always make sure your energies match, and you ask pertinent questions about the property. The Owner walked in during it and said, with a smile, “So, okay – when are you starting?” The historic Michigan Inn, now called the M22 Inn, was a vintage property and a huge creative challenge from that standpoint but we arrived excitedly to meet the General Manager and Owner who we just got along so well with – and off we went. We felt like our talents of organizing, passionately serving the guests, beautifying wherever we could really made a difference. One guest, who had been there for 30 years on and off when it was newly purchased by our owner, was upset when she arrived in June. She said that things weren’t the way they were used to. She came back in two months – and actually took me aside to tell me “Something is really different here, something has miraculously changed! The energy is so different. The flowers on the tables outside. Everything feels so clean. The lobby is now so cute with the vintage furniture made into a cafe feel.” All, things we implemented. Flowers, always flowers – even if just from the garden in each room – make such a difference to people feeling taken care of like you went the extra mile. We have learned a lot in the last 10 years to add to our caretaking skills. David folds a mean fitted sheet now and we can ‘peacock fold’ the towel rack which looks so inviting. We left the historic Inn in Michigan a better place and helped people make memories for a lifetime… how’s that for touching the world with your heart and talents?
People were always amazed. They thought this rent-free lifestyle was amazing. Nearly every guest asked – ‘How did you get to do this job?’ Our answer – “this little gem called The Caretaker Gazette.” Then, we share some of our story. We will continue to coach people on how they can have this lifestyle. And, we enthusiastically will also continue to support Inns and B&Bs, and vacation rentals with our marketing consulting to share how to get the most from their business in ways they never heard of. It’s a pretty good life, right? What do we love about it? It gives David and me a chance to write this lifestyle. We can carve out time to write without a heavy mortgage or rent, in fact, we are working on a TV Pilot about all our innkeeping adventures. On property caretaking gigs – even more time. It gives us time to read, and participate in nature – and after many years working hard as entrepreneurs – it is giving us finally extra money to make the next creative vision happen. Thanks, Gary and The Caretaker Gazette!!! We will continue to recommend you. We will build it (with your help, Gary) and the next gig will come!

HELP NEEDED. Our bush block on the western coast of the Coromandel Peninsula occupies a completely secluded valley surrounded by regenerating forest with beautiful views, bush walks and a lovely stream. The only sounds are from birds, the sea and the stream. A five minutes’ drive from here is a great cafe, a safe swimming beach is five minutes’ walk, all the hiking trails and attractions of the Coromandel Peninsula is one hour to 90 minutes’ drive from here and Thames Township with cafes and shops is 20 minutes away. On the property there are always plenty of things needing attention and help is very much appreciated. There are invasive weeds to remove, vegetable and flower gardens to tend, and pines to fell and cut for firewood. There’s building maintenance and cleaning, tracks to clear and fruit trees to tend. These tasks don’t need previous experience, just energy and willingness after initial direction. Any previous building experience and skill would be very welcome as would the ability to use a chainsaw, log splitter or a scrub-bar (weedeater). This would suit a single person, a couple or two friends – keen to help for a few days while exploring the Coromandel on leisure days. There are two spare bedrooms and a bathroom available for helpers, one bedroom with a double bed. This is a strictly vegetarian household, (the egg, meat, fish and chicken free version of vegetarian) and vegans are also welcome and provided for. If you’re in the area and would like to learn more, please call [Contact info available to subscribers]. I look forward to hearing from you.

WANT TO HELP BUILD A COMMUNITY? Love the sea? After finishing the building of our boat and our first sea-trial trip, we are presently based on an organic apple farm 40 minutes south of Oslo, where we are focusing on beekeeping as we intend to build up on honey production and queen-breeding this summer. We are a community-based project born over 10 years ago. Involving people from all over the globe, we hope to eventually form a community present both on land and at sea, that will cooperate with eco-villages, sharing the bliss of sustainable living and traveling through organic farming and sailing – connecting places and people across the oceans. If you have any knowledge or interest in permaculture, self-sufficiency, alternative living, etc., don’t hesitate to contact us and share your ideas. Our hopes are for the farm to flourish into a place where food, thoughts, plans, adventures, and – of course – boats, can grow! Please send an email to [Contact info available to subscribers] explaining why you would be interested in our community and include “Sea Gypsy Application” in the Subject Line: so we know you have been reading this. Love from Sailing the Farm, a sea gypsy tribe of tomorrow!

Oregon
HELLO! I am semi-retired and living in one of the most beautiful places in the Northwest. The Applegate Valley in Southern Oregon on three acres, and on the Applegate River, in Jacksonville. I have an RV site on the river which has power (30 amp.), great Wi-Fi, and freshwater. I will have the holding tanks pumped as needed and will provide a 100 gallon propane tank with fuel at your pad. If you do not have an RV I would be open to buying one! This is being offered as a long-term/full-time stay. The ideal candidate would be a single person with an RV in good condition, who would like to live rent free with all utilities paid, in trade for animal feeding and grounds supervision. Responsibilities would be caring for three sheep and two sheepdogs, feeding once a day and keeping water feeders and bowls clean in the mornings. Walking the fence-line for holes and keeping an eye on the irrigation system during Spring and Summer, and notify the owner if repairs are needed. If you enjoy gardening, there is space here to create raised boxes, or an in-ground garden, and there is endless water here from the river during the hotter months. Several fruit trees are on the property and wild blackberries in late summer. Fishing for Steelhead, Salmon and Trout is seasonal and requires a permit. While I am away, you would have access to the heated saltwater pool and the rest of the grounds. I’d also ask you to mow the two acres of grass using my Kubota ride-on tractor, once a week or less, and some lite weed eating. While I am on the property, just animal feeding/watering in the mornings and evenings would be needed. Big Plus if you enjoy yard work and can perform simple repairs on the property, and I would pay for harder extra work, but this would be on rare occasions, unless you would like to work, in which case it could be more often. All other free time is yours, so if you have other work or activities in the area, you will only need to check waters in the morning and be back in the evenings to feed and water animals. I prefer no other guests on the property, and the caretaker should be drug free and pretty much keep to themselves. Enjoy river kayaking at your doorstep, endless hiking and biking in the area, also great wineries, and mountain lakes are in the area. Medford is just 30 minutes away and the beautiful town of Jacksonville is 15 minutes away. If you need transportation, I have a clean little Tacoma you can use periodically for market runs and necessary local travel. Please email [Contact info available to subscribers]

SEEKING AN ONSITE CARETAKER for our manufactured housing community in Kingsland, TX, located one hour west of Austin. This position includes part-time work at $30 per hour and subsidized rent in one of the community’s homes. Twin Rivers is nice, clean and quiet and centrally located in Kingsland. We are a semi-retired couple and have owned and managed Twin Rivers for a decade. There are 30 homes in the community, fifteen are owner occupied and the rest are rentals. We have low turnover and many long-term residents. We have worked hard to create an affordable housing solution for Kingsland that offers folks a nice safe place to call home. We are seeking caretaker(s) who can provide handy-person services, lawn/landscaping services and oversee contractors (plumbers, air-conditioner repairmen, etc.). The base caretaker position is not full-time – some weeks will require more hours than others. “Mowing Season” during the summer will represent a significant amount of work. As we “turn over” rental homes, we are selling them and shifting to a home owner community. Preparing the homes for sale will provide significantly more work if the caretaker performs remodeling tasks. We are offering significantly discounted rent of $600/month on a three bedroom/two bathroom single wide home. The home has an extra-large front yard providing room for an additional storage shed. Kingsland is a small town located in the Texas Hill Country on Lake LBJ. Kingsland and the Highland Lakes area are known for great boating, fishing, and hiking. Twin Rivers is just down the street from banks, a pharmacy, HEB, a coffee shop, the post office and restaurants. There are only about 6,000 residents in Kingsland, so there is no traffic and yet nearby towns like Marble Falls provide plentiful shopping and health care options. We are looking for a contentious customer oriented individual or couple who share our values and work ethic. References and background check required. We are proud of Twin Rivers and the reputation we have built and the right caretaker will be able to take pride in their contributions as well. We will allow one small dog or cat. Please send your resume to [Contact info available to subscribers]
