Letters to the Editor
Thanks, Gary. You run a wonderful service. I found a great couple through my Hawaiian help-wanted ad that ran in The Caretaker Gazette a year ago. They’re moving on (to join their daughter in Bulgaria) but we’re staying good friends. Best Aloha to you! Tama S. New York, NY
Thanks for advertising with us again, Tama. We appreciate our long-term Help-Wanted advertisers! When youre ready to hire another experienced couple, please feel free to contact us. Thanks again!

I’ve noticed that you are not posting to Facebook any more. Why is that? Jill T. San Francisco, CA
Jill, The Caretaker Gazette’s Facebook account was part of a recent hack: therefore, we are no longer using it. You can always visit our homepage at www.caretaker.org and view our Twitter feed there, send us an email at caretaker@caretaker.org or give us a call (206) 462-1818. We continue to send subscribers our email updates with new listings several times per week.
What a great way to live! A private island in the Bahamas, a California mountain lake summer home complex and an Arizona desert RV resort – these are some of the caretaker opportunities I have experienced as a result of a subscription to The Caretaker Gazette. The diversity of locations and duties offered by the Gazette is a perfect fit for me. Currently I am the caretaker for a summer home complex in the California Mountains in the summer and an Arizona RV resort in the winter. To obtain the best result in responding to The Caretaker Gazette offerings, I learned to have my resume properly formatted, my references in order, and to move quickly to apply. If I was not successful with the submission, I continued to follow up to keep my name in front of the employer. This process has resulted in offers when the original candidate did not work out. Living life by my terms is a dream come true! I’m doing what I want, where I want and whenever I’m so inclined to get out and explore new places and people! This arrangement keeps my pump pumping! Gene S. Vancouver, WA
Thanks for your nice letter, Gene. Let us know if we can publish a future Caretaker profile story on your various caretaking experiences.
Hi Gary, as a result of your email broadcast of my ad looking for a caretaker and including my ad and photo on your Twitter feed, I have culled it down to three great candidates. One will join me on my country property next month. If things don’t work out as planned I still have two possibilities who I can turn to if needed. I think between including my ad in your broadcast and having it on your Twitter and caretaker.org I had at least a dozen applicants for my position. Thank you so much! Sincerely, Ruth R., Seattle, WA
Hi Ruth, thanks for writing and for running your ad with us for help on your country property. We were happy to run your ad and photo on The Caretaker Gazette’s Twitter page, which features new help wanted listings that have already appeared in recent email updates that were already emailed to all our Gazette subscribers. The email updates, like the one that included your ad, that go out to all our subscribers contain more detailed descriptions of the position and include contact information. Property owners, like you, have requested that we feature a summary of their ad and a photo on the Gazette homepage and Twitter page, so they can obtain additional exposure for their ads.

WE ARE SEEKING AN AWESOME CARETAKER with their own RV, 5th Wheel, or travel trailer. One to three acres of land is offered rent-free in exchange for acting as caretaker for the ranch. The property is located just 20 miles outside of Show Low on 40+ acres. It has an abundance of mature Pinon trees, rock outcroppings, and meadow/flat areas. The property offers privacy, seclusion, and nature at its best! Lots of birds, deer, antelope, and bear. It is a beautiful property, and shopping, dining, and services are a short drive away. There is a world class golf course (Crystal Creek) nearby. While we are in a semi-remote rural area you will not be far from all that you need. Activities to be developed on the property are an organic garden, beekeeping/honey production, therapeutic riding, and an art program. If you enjoy living in a semi-remote area, off the grid and seek a sustainable lifestyle – we’d love to hear from you. Please read carefully, and make sure you are prepared to live off the grid. We will only respond to potential candidates whom we feel will be a match to become part of our family and ranch team. Your RV, 5th Wheel, or travel trailer must be in good condition and you must supply your own propane, power, and water. If you have horses you will be able to fence off (three acres) for living and pasture for the horses. Please email your resume and cover letter to [Contact info available to subscribers] The cover letter should be specific to the caretaker position, tell us the skill set and experience you have that directly relates to the position and why the caretaker position is a great fit for you. Please include the length of time you feel you will be available to fill this position. Six months, one year or longer, if all works out. We all know things happen in life and all opportunities don’t always work out. If selected and you or I feel that it isn’t a good match we will part as friends and wish you well. We require that if the owner is on the property you give us a 48-hour notice that you will be withdrawing from acting as the caretaker. This will give us time to sign you out of the property and verify that any ranch property has been accounted for and the one acre lot is left in the same or improved condition. Caretaker duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: providing caretaking services and labor – this position could develop into the caretaker receiving a stipend and or a salary. You will be required to perform handyman/repairs, landscaping, clearing, land management, construction, customer service, electrical, solar system and wind turbine repair and management. Should be willing to learn or have experience. As we develop the ranch you will be called upon to learn beekeeping, organic gardening or other skills that will allow you to caretake/manage ranch operations. You should be a jack of all trades, able to troubleshoot, build and or fabricate parts if necessary. Initially, you will perform property checks and work closely with the owner to ensure the security and safety of any property assets. A plus to being the caretaker is you will enjoy the bountiful harvest from the organic garden, orchard, honey, and farm fresh eggs. There will be times when there is much to accomplish and other times when there will be plenty of free time to spend with your family, friends, recreational time or just enjoy the peace and quiet here. This position is best suited for a retired person with a retirement income or someone who has an outside job that won’t interfere with your caretaking responsibilities. You must be a team player in deed and word, honest, dependable, inventive, creative, troubleshooter and problem solver with a can-do attitude, personable, professional and respectful. As the caretaker you will enjoy the freedom to landscape, grow a garden, and bring your toys. You are allowed two cars, one truck, one or two ATV’s, one boat, one or two horses (will consider) one or two pets (will consider/no aggressive breeds). Must be willing to pass a background screening and drug check. If there is anything I need to know about you, please include it in your cover letter. Honesty is the best policy. All information will be kept private and confidential. If selected the first step in the selection process is a 1) Phone interview 2) Face-to-face interview 3) Tour of the property 4) Offer to become the caretaker.

Germany
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. We are a small meditation and retreat center located near Hamburg that is focused on providing an environment to meditate, go inwards, calm down and reconnect with oneself and the Sacred in the inner and outer. It is a place of stillness and peace, and perfectly suited for experienced meditators and other experienced spiritual practitioners who might also like to enjoy the natural surroundings. You are welcome as a volunteer if you enjoy deep (inner) silence, like to meditate with us, twice daily, like to pay attention to detail and precision in your work and mostly everything you do, would like to reduce your digital intake to the necessary minimum, during your stay with us, are “experienced” on the spiritual path: You have your own spiritual practice and have been on retreat before, would like to use your time here for your personal timeout and spiritual retreat – apart from the hours that you help in the house or garden. What this means for you personally can be very individual: meditation, prayer, contemplation, deep bodywork, relaxation techniques, long walks in nature, dream work, certain kinds of reading etc. (Some people depend on music, singing, dancing or intense bodywork as their way of reconnecting. Our place is not suited to accommodate to these needs, as we love inner stillness so much.) If any of the above is not the case we cannot host you as a volunteer. In the house, we combine an almost monastic clarity (and a certain strictness that is necessary for this clarity) with a more female warmth and caring when hosting our guests. We are two permanent residents and offer three private guestrooms. We are intense meditators and like to meditate for three to four hours, daily (morning and evening meditations). You need to have your own practices and topics that you want to work or focus on as otherwise you will be bored quickly. Beginners on the spiritual path were oftentimes not happy here, as we just “live” a deep spiritual focus that has some elements of monastic life. We do not offer specific schooling or teaching, but the house provides support for your own efforts in a multitude of ways. We love to share and talk with you about our respective spiritual experiences, practices and efforts that each of us has had, personally. For some volunteers, the stay with us has been truly transformational. We are a small quiet place. We ask volunteers to leave after a few days if they are not making use of the purpose of the house (going inwards in some personal way, as described above). We have a peaceful garden with pond, large meditation room, library, and a nature sanctuary for water birds is adjacent to the property, with great views! The expected help hours are: 25 hours/week for free accommodation and organic vegetarian food (self-catering from the kitchen storage). Or: 15 hours/week for free accommodation only. In this case: Please bring your own food or share in the costs. Help is appreciated in the following areas: gardening, cleaning, repair or maintenance work. From May to November, we also have many fruits, vegetables, berries and leaves to harvest (for private use in the house, only). In autumn, preparing apple-pear compote and making apple juice are also regular tasks, as we try to make use of the thousands of apples from the garden. My work related experience has given me the chance to apply for caretaker positions. The experience I have gained through various jobs and positions fit nicely. But I have to admit there were a few times I questioned what I was doing with my life! I am a single male who enjoys photography, hiking, biking, and so much more. I strive to create community, can work independently, and am also a great team player. One of my passions is volunteering which led me to become involved with the Visitor’s Bureau of Albuquerque for six years along with being very active in my neighborhood association. I also bought and totally renovated a home in Ocean Grove, New Jersey where I received the Beersheba Award from their Camp Meeting Association acknowledging my work in historic renovation. Before I left Ocean Grove, my friend Eileen told me about The Caretaker Gazette and the great opportunities it provided. So, I subscribed and now have found my perfect job as a result. But my first management job began in Los Angeles in 1983. I was offered a part-time position as on-site manager in the Fairfax district. My duties involved collecting rents as well as being the contact person for tenants experiencing any issues. Little did I know that this would be the beginning of a long affair in property management! In 2007, I was living in Albuquerque, New Mexico where I managed an apartment complex, learned many new aspects of property management, becoming a self-starter and the go-to-guy for all maintenance issues. I was able to identify problems, see potential issues, and solve them ahead of time. I gained a multitude of experience in the repair field while developing a keen eye for detail or curb appeal. The company eventually expanded into short-term rentals, which also provided me experience in furnishing units and inventory control. Eventually I took on more management and maintenance positions for other apartment owners in the neighborhood. The wonderful thing about life is we never know what is ahead. While surfing the web, I found an ad for a position in Alaska for a tour guide/bus driver for a major cruise line. I interviewed over the phone and was hired on the spot. The job was in Fairbanks, Alaska and I was to leave shortly to begin training as a motor coach driver/tour guide. I packed up my belongings, had a huge yard sale, put some things in storage, and headed to my new Alaskan home. Living that far north in the summer, I soon realized the sun is out nearly 24 hours each day – truly the land of the midnight sun. When the season ended, back to New Mexico I headed wondering what would come next. When I arrived back a friend called and asked me if I would help her out, caring for her daughter’s home, taking care of her two dogs and yard while she came stateside. My friend was experiencing health issues and needed her daughter’s help. I said I would do it! It just so happened that her daughter lived on the big island of Hawaii! They offered me a salary, a place to live, and a truck to drive. So, I mowed the lawn, took the dogs out, and made sure everything was taken care of. Plus, I got to explore the Big Island of Hawaii for five weeks! What a deal! Afterwards, I returned to Albuquerque and a job offer at a building that was built in the 1920’s. This provided me another great opportunity to learn more about managing, rehab work and renting out units. A great experience for two years, but alas the building was soon sold. What next? Having subscribed to The Caretaker Gazette for many years, I decided to read the latest issue online. To my surprise there was a management position listed just 90 minutes north of Albuquerque and 30 minutes outside of Santa Fe. I responded to the ad, was interviewed and a day later was hired. My new position is in a little town called Galisteo. I oversee the property for an older but very active couple who own a little piece of paradise. I am responsible for interacting with outside vendors, implementing a maintenance schedule for all infrastructure repairs, which includes the owners’ home and my beautiful, cozy, two bedroom casita with fireplace and small yard. I do some outdoor upkeep of the property, as well as the household duties associated with maintaining the homes. I am on call to drive the owners to appointments as well as occasional evening engagements. My morning routine begins with feeding the wild birds and taking Sophie, their rescue dog, for a walk through the arroyo. I not only have a very comfortable home but receive a salary as well. What a deal! For me, being a caretaker is not about free rent but more about the lifestyle that property management and caretaking offers. I am flexible and perfectly fit for this type of work. Well-suited to wear many hats, I like what I do. I take my responsibilities seriously and enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done. Through my many jobs, there were perks that arrived without me knowing it at the beginning – many benefits I could never have dreamed of. So, as I close, I want to say thank you Gary for providing me this incredible experience by publishing the awesome Caretaker Gazette. I look forward to many more new and exciting adventures that this Caretaker Gazette position brings and the many future unknown ones ahead of me.

CARETAKER COUPLE needed. After two wonderful years here, my home and property caretakers must leave. I am looking to replace them with a couple as committed as they are. This is a work-trade arrangement. In exchange for caring for my home and other aspects of the land, your home is rent-free. I work very hard, I go to Santa Fe almost every day except Sunday and need support on the ranch. Currently, the home of the caretaker is rustic, simple, partially furnished. It was intended to be a garage type structure and one day will be. It had a simple kitchen, a small bathroom, and a loft bedroom upstairs. A concrete floor. It is heated via wood stove. You would provide your own wood. It has a washer/dryer and fridge. No dishwasher. The cottage is approximately 900+ square feet. There is no fence around the cottage. I am building a new home on my land, it is rammed earth. It will take almost another year to complete. Once I move out of the home I am living in, it will become the home of the caretakers. It is a one bedroom, one bath, with a small atrium, tiny living room, and an amazing kitchen, a delightful 2.5 acre backyard fenced in, a wonderful patio, porch, and great views of the pond. It has a large loft area that may be used as another bedroom or studio space, office, etc. There is storage closet upstairs. The house has lots of natural light and windows. It is all solar, propane for hot water and heat in one room, which may change. It also has a wood stove. It is a magical home. And yes, there is a claw foot tub in the bedroom. The work trade includes sprucing up my home Tuesday through Friday, I like it to feel like a temple. I am not a messy person. You will need to refill the bird feeders and bird baths Monday through Friday. I have two dogs that you would care for during the day and chickens. The dogs are German Shepherds. A love of dogs is of utmost importance. Chickens are easy in the summer, harder in the winter. If I need to travel, you would be on the job weekends too. That doesn’t happen often. On Monday, I have extra support, someone that comes into clean. That is a day for you to take care of odds and ends inside or out that need to be done. Maintaining the sacred space of your own home and surrounding area is a requirement while helping me with mine and my animals. The entire property is 275 acres. My new home is about 4,000 sq. ft. It is further away from the current homes, so more privacy afforded to everyone however I will be using the house the caretakers will be moving out of for an art studio or other fun pursuits. The caretaking couple must have a reverence for place and honor the property I have worked so hard to be on. It is remote and private. It is technically a subdivision. You must be comfortable with the isolation. It can get super windy out here. We have more weather, rain and snow, than in Santa Fe. Your house does not have a garage. We have pack rats out here. Keeping the hood open on our cars at night has completely cured the problem of them chewing wires. Only people who can pass a thorough background check should apply. It is a two-person situation, a couple is required. I would like people on the property most of time, not leaving during the day and rushing home to get things done before I get here. One person should be capable of maintaining things like small plumbing leaks or other repairs, only serious, long-term applicants need apply. Honesty is non-negotiable. Quiet, respectful people are a must. This is a sanctuary. I appreciate my privacy. Generally I will leave notes during the week on the kitchen island to communicate anything. Most, but not all, Sunday’s, I will cook dinner and get together with you so we can discuss anything we need to and get to know each other better. I’ve covered a lot here so there is not a lot of back and forth because I didn’t provide enough information. Local applicants are preferred. If you are interested, please send your resume to [Contact info available to subscribers] I will not respond to general inquires unless I have some information about you. Excellent references are required. The current caretakers will help with the process and training.

I spent half a year meditating in a cave in rural Tibet and plan to ordain as a monk in the near future. I am mature, reliable, friendly, and hard-working. Seeking paid positions anywhere in the U.S. or abroad, with between a six month and two year time commitment. Please email [Contact info available to subscribers].
house sitting Job Wanted. Experienced, full-time housekeeper and business owner looking for a slowed down and quieter way of life. I have experience working seven days a week and am a good communicator. I am interested in one house sitting job that is long-term and I am open to different areas of the United States. I am a very loyal worker and I would require a secure situation. When I connect to a new family, I usually work with them to create a unique, individualized To-Do-List, and use that to focus my activities at the house and to make sure everything gets done. I am comfortable working alone, and as a house sitter and not just a housekeeper, I would be happy to come up with some new task/ideas with you, to make sure that the things that need to get done – do get done. I do have some other experiences too, such as multiple pet care for people with many pets, elder care routines for a family member, watering plants, and even some experience feeding farm animals on occasion, like chickens and goats. Since my experience as just a house sitter is a bit new, I am willing to work for three months, without stipend or pay, just to get some experience and to see if the job is right for me. I know issues can definitely come up, even for a job I am experienced with, so I’d like to lower the pressure on this new venture of mine – and just see how it goes. Please email [Contact info available to subscribers] Thanks.

An Alternative to Costly Medical Insurance
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both property owners and caretakers/house sitters, have discussed their healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives with us. We recently dropped our current medical insurance when the premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual deductible. We switched to a $354 per month healthcare program called Medi-Share. I wanted to share some information with you about Medi-Share as I thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare. Like us, you and your family could join their community of 250,000+ who share in each other’s medical burdens. Since 1993 more than $2 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and discounted by Medi-Share members. With Medi-Share you and your family won’t need to worry about the mandate to purchase health insurance or pay costly penalties and fees, since members are exempt through a special provision in the Affordable Care Act. If you would like to learn more, please go to http://bit.ly/2gvMroU or please call Myles Lilley who is a Member Development Specialist at Christian Care Ministry at 800-772-5623 extension 2224. I hope this helps! Take care, Gary C. Dunn, Publisher THE CARETAKER GAZETTE

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005, was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. During the start of the year 2005, the handwriting on the wall began and the books closed on this historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then, became my pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true happenings during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the open range while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into usable cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later in the other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among wild cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin out in Arizona’s beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever dreamed of being a cowboy, here’s your chance to ride along with me as your side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an entertaining introduction with many colored pictures at www.lastdkcowboy.wordpress.com
