Dear Gary, just wanted to let you know that my Situations Wanted ad in your Gazette resulted in me finding a winter position for myself in the Southwest! Also, I have enclosed my change of address and a check for another year of the Gazette. I’ll enjoy reading all the new ads while I’m house sitting down here in sunny Arizona! P.B., Tucson, AZ

We received an offer but decided not to take the position in the end because the timing wasn’t right for us. We still remain hopeful we will find something and are encouraged that we received an offer. H. and P. B., Portland, OR

Guatemala

I AM LOOKING FOR DOG/house sitter in Jaibalito, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala starting January 5, 2013 for seven weeks. The village is only accessible by boat so this requires a certain degree of agility/mobility. You pay $35 for electric and $15 for gas as well as walk Zita a minimum of two times a day for 20 minutes. More/longer are welcome! You have to dote on her, bathe her, and spend nights at home. Because of boat only access, this means you’re in the pueblo after 5:30pm. The property does better with some care. A gardener comes 10 hours a week and he knows how to keep busy on his own. However, with the dry season, an hour of watering a day (mostly with sprinkler but some hand watering) is needed. Gardening opportunities are boundless. A housecleaner comes on Wednesday mornings. There is a rental cottage next door. Currently, it is occupied and causes you no work. It is meant to be let for six months. If it was to become available, I’d ask you to help out in terms of meeting new tenants with a key and calling the housecleaner. I’ve had 8-year-olds and their moms, 65-year-old retired men, a couple in their late 30’s, single women, and an array of people stay here. Again, this somewhat remote location with boat access only is not to all tastes. Life here is somewhat physical with the boat passage, walking, etc. It’s not for everyone. The most important criteria are a dog lover who has respect for the house and awareness of the responsibility that comes with that charge. Posada Jaibalito has Internet and Wi-Fi, a three minute walk away. Internet (for those who need high capacity) is best from Panajachel, a 30 minute boat ride away. The house is a two bedroom/one bath, kitchen, hot water shower, washing machine and is approximately 1,000 sq. ft. The property is fenced. Zita has the run of the yard and house. It is a five minute walk from the public boat dock. Basic groceries can be bought in Jaibalito. More specialized items must be bought in Pana, a 30 minute boat ride away. I’m also looking for mid April through early July 2013. Please email [Contact info available to subscribers] if you are interested. Thanks.

The exchange is five days of four hours each, total of 20 hours each week. The season for our citrus fruits orchard is winter, but with care bananas can grow the whole year round. Caretaker Profile

“Earth Stewards – Global Adventuring Couple” Dates of Birth: Moira – May 21, 1957, Paula – April 7, 1956 Address: [Contact info available to subscribers] Interests: Plant-based healing, Eco-psychology, Spirituality, Photography, Self-awareness, Sustainable living, Joyful living, Dance, Healthy living, Healthy cooking, International travel, Alternative health, Grassroots business development, Hiking, Singing, Sharing life with four-leggeds. Paula and Moira in Gaucin, Spain

Our caretaking began with a Google search…having relocated to London from the U.S. to be with Moira, I was looking for work. After many years of advocating for and working with those who were at risk, children with learning needs, families and children meeting mental health challenges, people living with disabilities; as well as teaching and providing services in psychology and massage, working with indigenous elders, and running a small business, I felt the pull of meeting my dream of living abroad. I felt I could run Mother Anita’s (aromatherapy products, massage balms) abroad, but needed a place to adventure (and to live) while doing so. Moira had a career filled with care for others, especially elders and a love of the “Power of Clean”, the love of cleaning to create a place to be and the love of cooking healthily. With this background, I had been creatively and actively looking for work abroad, looking for something which honored my interests in living in close connection with the earth and being in places which were unique from my own New England upbringing. With that in mind, one morning I typed the words, “Jobs for Paula” in my Google search and found a website which had information about The Caretaker Gazette. “Hmmm…this sounds very interesting. I have never heard of this before”, I said to myself, “right up my alley”. We were looking for freedom from home payments, travel opportunities and the ability to make use of my homeowner skills and our professional work experiences. The job posts were fantastic in places I had dreamed of living. I saw two postings in Spain and immediately contacted them. It was friendly there, warm, and fit the slow living, earth-focused lifestyle which we were looking to lead. Our Spanish experience began while we were on holiday in Spain when we visited our two contacts from The Caretaker Gazette. They both held promise and both positions were offered to us, but we chose the beautiful finca in Gaucin, Spain after meeting the owner. We fell in love with the outstanding beauty of the Andalucian countryside and signed a contract for 12 months or until the property rented or sold. The property was on the market, looking out over Gibraltar from high in the mountains, across the valleys to the sea and to Africa. What a place to begin our life together! We were selected for the position because we had the personal and professional skills the owner was looking for, we were a mature couple, were able to keep the property in great working order, provide security and were experienced with both property and pet management. As a new couple, and before we met, we loved our privacy, got along well with others and were not interested in pursuing an active nightlife of entertaining. This was important to the owner! We looked after the dogs, got along with the gardener and provided property management info about the house, its off-the-grid systems and the upkeep of it to the owner. Our view out of the window meant we didn’t need to leave home to appreciate the unrivaled beauty of Andalucía, Spain. We listened in the night as the cows and sheep moved up on the hillside behind the house, their bells gently tinkling as they grazed. We deeply appreciated the migrations of the birds throughout the valley and marveled at the raptors and other large birds which loved to soar outside the house into the deep valleys below us. Spectacular local fresh fruit, lovely vegetables, and farm fresh food were available everywhere inexpensively. We explored a lot of the local areas of Spain with day trips and often had great hikes into the Parque National which was close to our finca – all we had to do was walk out of the door to be surrounded by spectacular beauty. I was also able to develop local contacts for organic production ingredients for Mother Anita’s products. Our caretaking position in Spain was a wonderful combination of experiences of all our passions. We have moved from that position now. We are currently in the English countryside caring for three dogs, two kittens and a lovely bungalow in a small village. Again we met the homeowner through The Caretaker Gazette, emailed and spoke on the phone and visited in person. We like to visit and see how the fit is for us as we prefer longer caretaking assignments. We are beginning to network to find like-minded folks who grow plants, raise bees, and other materials which I again may be able to use in Mother Anita’s products and a place to put our hands into the soil. We keep The Caretaker Gazette close at hand, read it diligently and seek new adventures in other lands. We have interviewed over Skype for our positions, and then met the owners. If you’re looking to house sit, be creative, know what your heart loves, what your skills are and follow your instincts. It’s also important to know what you don’t want. Caretaking is a joyful lifestyle.

Missouri

WE ARE SEEKING A DEPENDABLE PERSON/COUPLE to help with farm and rental property duties. We are only a small operation with a total of nine rentals and two farms with 27 head of cattle (plus calves) and 20+ head of horses. We are currently trying to get out of the horse business and convert to cattle, but will always have some horses on hand so working with horses is definitely a plus. We can’t offer a lot in the way of salary, which is why we’re looking for someone who is retired with his/their own additional source of income or someone willing to take on outside work. However, we can provide a nice four bedroom/three bath home with a swimming pool, 28 acres and two barns (currently one of our rentals) for your use as well as a small weekly or monthly salary. While the property does not have a riding barn or covered arena, it does have 12 stalls which you can use to run your own breaking/training/farrier business on the side as long as our needs are met… or raise a few calves of your own. We are located in the beautiful Ozarks in south central Missouri not far from the Arkansas border. There are numerous rivers/streams/lakes surrounding us and hunting abounds for deer and turkey. We want someone who is able to manage a rental business and take care of routine repairs which will involve some plumbing/carpentry/electrical work as well as fence building/maintenance, working cattle and horses, and various other duties involved in the day-to-day operations of a farm. We do not expect major repairs such as re-roofing or rewiring a house, etc., but typical duties will include but are not limited to repair of leaky faucets/toilets, minor electrical repairs such as putting up a ceiling fan or installing a garbage disposal, replacing or repairing guttering, etc. Naturally, the farm work will involve working with animals, operating and upkeep of farm equipment, installing/maintaining fence, etc. We would love to be able to travel so need someone we can totally depend on to take care of our renters/animals while we are away. Our rentals are currently in good condition and we want to keep them that way; we prefer to fix a problem on the front end rather than the back. If this position sounds like something that you would be interested in, please let us know when it would be convenient for us to discuss this in detail with you. Also, please forward us your cover letter, resume, etc. informing us of your requirements and give us a time when we can contact you via phone. Thank you for your time and consideration. The cafe has a two bedroom/one bath cottage that is right behind the cafe and is available within the deal. The current owner has another business and cannot give the cafe the full attention and dedication it needs. Looking for a long-term lease with possible purchase option. The location is on Highway 285, about 45 miles southwest of Denver outside of the town of Grant. Please call [Contact info available to subscribers] with any interest.
