WE NEED HELP with chores in and around the house in exchange for free rent and utilities. We are looking for a couple or person comfortable with good natured, lovable horses and comfortable with living 12 miles from the city limits. Earlier this year my husband and I responded to one of the Gazette caretaking positions that you had sent out through one of your email updates but we were not selected for the position. The landowners just contacted us again and have now offered us the job! It turns out that the couple who originally accepted the position had to leave for personal reasons. Dear Editor, I first encountered The Caretaker Gazette when I interviewed its publisher, Gary Dunn, for an MSN Money article called “How you can live rent-free” http://tinyurl.com/nxozcl. Too bad I didn’t re-read this article before acquiring a couple of house sitters of my own. I spent nearly four months away from home and had two different people watching my place, with varying degrees of success, mostly because I neglected the cardinal rule of house sitting: “Get everything in writing.” No lasting harm done, and I was actually able to turn it into an essay for my personal website, “The true and simple rules for house-sitting” http://tinyurl.com/385e9qo. One of the comments left by a reader contained a piece of advice I’d like to offer to Caretaker Gazette subscribers: The reader, a full-time house sitter, says she takes detailed photographs in case she moves things around. When it’s time for her to leave, she can be sure of having everything back in its place. Wish my house sitters had known that. Donna, it was a pleasure being interviewed by you for your piece on www.msn.com. We always emphasize to both property owners and house sitters to put as much as you can in writing, even if you need a house sitter for just a weekend. And thanks for sharing the tip about photographing the inside of a home at the very start of house sitting. It’s great advice!

Gary just wanted to drop you a quick thanks. For the past several years, I was away from my home base working in Boston. I travel with work and for pleasure and often need a temporary Mom for my Cocker Spaniel. Even with strong support from friends and family, I still had gaps in house/dog-sitting coverage, so I ran my first ad with you in 2007. The sitters that I found through the Gazette were amazing. People came from all over the US and Canada for a week at a time. They were a pleasure to meet and I was relieved to know that they would be at home while I was away. My friends and family thought I was nuts to let strangers come to visit, but I could not have been happier with the experience. I still keep in touch with some of the sitters. I fell in love with Mexico and knew that someday not only would I go back for another vacation, but I had dreams that I would eventually wind up living there, and so I did.” After graduating from high school, Sheri attended Cosmetology Arts and Sciences School in Norman, Oklahoma and managed a successful full service salon there. “After a decade of being in business and on almost every board in town, I was tired. I wanted a change of pace so I sold my salon, put my house on the market and spent six months with a friend on his 36-foot luxury boat in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico.” Sheri learned how to read Charlie’s charts and co-captain a power boat. After this experience Sheri found, “I quickly realized that I could live a lifestyle that allowed me to travel. I felt I had a lot to offer the caretaker profession, so after reading The Caretaker Gazette for the first time, I started applying for caretaking jobs.” After responding to an ad in the Gazette, she accepted a caretaking position on Roatan, an island off Honduras.
